Shar Pei House Training

House training your shar pei doesn't have to be stressfull. After all this breed is known for almost house training themselves. Actaully training any breed doesn't have to be that complicated with just some key steps.

In just a few weeks puppy will have the basics figured out. However you can expect the occasional accident to occur. You can't expect perfection.

shar pei house trainingYou need to start by choosing a spot that's easy for puppy to get too outside. However, you don't have to start by immediately taking puppy outside if you are going to be leaving her alone for periods longer than she'll be able to hold it. Then select a spot within her space where you can place puppy training pads. Dog.com - Discount Pet Supplies

Basic Routine

You need to start with the basics:

  1. Remember this and you'll have things simplified in no time - puppies must go to the washroom after they eat, drink, play, and sleep. When puppy starts to go initiate a simple phrase like "go now," or "hurry up." Over time your puppy will learn that they must eliminate themselves when you say these words.
  2. When your puppy does his/her business ethusiastifally praise him/her and immediately give a treat. Your puppy will learn that a reward goes with eliminating themselves.
  3. If you take puppy to the elimination area but he/she doesn't show any interest in doing their business. Return indoors and then try again in 30 minutes but do watch closely inbetween time.
  4. Always go outside with your puppy. That way you can watch to make sure they have eliminated.

Ring That Bell

The shar pei is a very smart breed who loves to learn. In no time at all you can teach your shar pei to ring a bell to tell you that they need to go out. Place a group of lightweight bells on a light chain that you attach to the door. Each time you take your puppy outside you ring the bells. In no time your puppy will be ringing to go out. I trained our last pup to ring the bell before she was even 8 weeks old - they are smart!

Supervise

Watch closely to see how your dog acts when he/she is going to elimiante. Does your puppy circle? squat? Sneak off towards the dog. If your puppy stats to eliminate inside you need to intervene right away. You say no loudly and firmly [but no yelling] while at the same time scooping him/her outside.

Your puppy will tend to return to the same spot so make sure you spray with a neutralizing enzyme. If you can't be home then you need to crate train [that's another story]. Your puppy will begin to develop a routine over time. Then you won't have to suprevise quite as dillegently. After eliminating they should be good for about 60 minutes once they get into a routine.

By the age of three months they'll be able to hold it for about three hours and will be able to hold it through the night.

Your shar pei is very smart so in no time at all your shar pei will be housebroken.
